This is also a fact. That America's moves on Afghanistan translates into a geopolitical victory for Russia, they were out and now they are in. I can't speak for the professors or consultants you cite, but I know that there were credible observers with the NYT and in other countries who were sounding warnings bells regarding Afghanistan when the U.S. exited the region after the Soviet pullout. As well, a lot of people questioned why, if the U.S. was only twenty miles outside Baghadad with 101st Airborne, they didn't carry on to finish the job... So sure, certain critics are full of sh*t, but not all. Some are worth listening too. A U.S. government paper identifies Iran as the world number producer of terrorists, so its fodder for critics to ask why is the U.S. making friends with Iran. (I agree with the U.S. approach). But recall, Iraq earlier was the U.S. friend and Iran was the enemy. The region remains in turmoil....what's different this time around?
