Globe says CDNX fails as high-volume junior market

Canadian Venture Exchange *CDNX

Friday Nov 30 2001 In the News
The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 30, edition that Bill Hess gave the Canadian Venture Exchange a much-needed credibility boost when he became its president two years ago, but with his resignation, he is leaving behind some broken dreams. The Globe's Brent Jang writes in the Business West column that instead of becoming a mini-Nasdaq of the North, the CDNX got taken over by the Toronto Stock Exchange in July. Since then, the CDNX has been shedding staff as its operations get integrated with the TSE. Even though the CDNX became part of the TSE, the western-based "farm team" was supposed to thrive as its own entity and carve out its own niche as an exchange where high-tech and resource sector entrepreneurs and investors would flock. In recent months, however, it has become glaringly obvious that while the CDNX can still nurture some firms aspiring to graduate to the TSE, establishing a high-volume junior market in Canada is too lofty a goal. Declining interest in small-cap investments has dragged down the CDNX's image.
