Very difficult to do.

Transition to a new system is always the hardest part. I think this one is flat impossible. Usually, when a transition works, it's because a lot of money is thrown at the transition to make everyone whole. In this case, that would cost way, way too much and would be very cumbersome to implement, more complex that what we have now, and we'd have to be in transition mode for decades. While I appreciate where the consumption tax advocates are coming from, it's just not feasible so they'd be better off throwing their weight behind a simplified income tax. Something is better than nothing.

The state where I live has no income tax

I'm looking to relocate in retirement and I'm scratching my head over the various state tax approaches. Maybe I'll just make a choice based on climate and quit trying to figure out the tax implications. Doing so only makes my head grayer, faster.

<< The state where I live has no income tax, which I like. We're still one of the highest taxed states in the country, with very high sales tax and a variety of other bizarre tax schemes on businesses. I can't support any move to an income tax because I don't trust the politicians to impose an income and reduce the other BS taxes we have to pay. >>

Smithee, this is also true of my state. And that is exactly how I feel about it.
