Let me recommend, again, that folk who care about what the US funded in Afghanistan in the 80s and early 90s take a look at Robert Kaplan's argument in his Soldiers of God that we gave our funding proxy to the Pakistan government which, in turn, funded groups fundamentalist groups that had little following in Afghanistan but would, then, be heavily dependent on the Pakistanis. The strategy was, so Kaplan argues, in our short term interests, but not our long term ones.
