Some of it was directly distributed by relief agencies. To some unknown extent the funds or food provided probably did get used by Afghan warlords but it isn't accurate to say that this really makes us the Taliban's sponsor which would imply not just that some money got from the US government to the Taliban but that we where a major if not the primary source of money for them, and perhaps directly gave money for the purpose of them staying in power. If I buy a Ford, and later Ford's CEO donates money to a cause that I disagree with I would hardly call myself a sponsor of that cause.
