During the Russian debacle however the US economy was strong and growing and able to absorb a hit. Things are not the same now. I don't remember hearing the largest collapse of a US corporation back then (ie. Enron). Or the higher unemployment in 20 years. We are not in Kansas anymore people. The bubble has burst.

Actually now that I think of it the only thing that has a parallel in the current situation is the bubble burst of Japan (and 1929 of course). They had a lot of large corporation failures as well. Interests down to almost zero. High unemployment. And we all know how well their market has done during the last 10 years, right?
