According to the research firm IDC, 3.8 million people in the United States subscribed for high-speed Internet access through cable modems at the end of 2000, outstripping DSL service by almost three to one. Excite@Home serves a large majority of those cable modem subscribers. . . A spokesman for Comcast, which provides high-speed cable modem access to 700,000 subscribers, also could not be reached for comment. In recent days, however, Comcast representatives said they expected that a deal could be reached among the interested parties. . . Similarly, Laura Oberhelman, a spokeswoman for Cox, which offers Excite@Home cable modem service to 550,000 subscribers, said late today that the company still hoped that the court decision would "not result in interruption" of service nytimes.com
