Bill, I can assure you that true Christians believe the bible is self sufficent. Where you go wrong is the groups you mention, like the Protestants and Roman Catholics, for example, society calls Christians. But just because you call yourself something, that doesn't make you it. I would say as a Christian, if you rely on anything other than the bible for God's message, I would question your Christianity. Catholicism, Protestantism, Judiasm are religions. Christianity is a belief. There is no religion that is solely Christian. You can be born into any religion and still have, or not have, the Christian belief. You are mixing religion and belief together, and they are two seperate entities. (It is an easy trap to fall into however, because society tends to draw a hazy line between the two. But society is wrong in this regard, trust me! Religion is religion, belief is belief!) And to be honest with you, I rather pass on the religion part and stick to the belief part! I really am not a fan of any religion! And I'll take this one step further, groups that rely on commentaries written by men, and not the bible, that say they are Christian, probably aren't Christian for the most part! Bill, the bible defines the message. You believe the message or not, based solely on the bible. The amplification and teaching comes in to enhance it, not to define it. (And any amplification or refinement must be measured back against the bible, to see if it stays within the teachings of it.) If any other material is used to define God's message, such as the Catachism, Talmud, etc.. I would venture to say you have relied upon men, not God, and you will be led astray. Men are prone to err! God is not unfair. He loves us all! He provides us a simple way to find out the truth. If he did not, one would have to question his love for us. We went off on too much of a tangent here, and I will end it! I apologize to others for going off topic!
