(a) Neither Indonesia or Saudi Arabia are members of NAFTA. Maybe a tariff on oil would be a good idea. Certainly Saudi Arabia has its share of massive tariffs.

(b) The US does put a tariff on shoes, though not a large one. I'd bet that Indonesia complains about it:

(c) The bottom line is that protectionism does work. The US used protectionism for the first what, 150 years of its existence? It grew like a weed over that time. The Civil war was partly fought over the issue. Where protectionism isn't a good idea is between countries with the same level of advancement. An example of that would be between the US and Canada.

(d) Most of the problem with Canada is that their government controls (most of) their forests. If they were privately held maybe they wouldn't be selling them off at such low stumpage rates. Or maybe they would. It's obvious to me that Canada has too much wood. (Just like I did when I was younger.)
