Zinni tours Gaza; envoy Burns briefs Jordanian king

By News Agencies

U.S. Mideast envoy, General (retired) Anthony Zinni met with senior Palestinian officials in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. Palestinian sources say that PA officials will likely take Zinni to sites recently bombed by the Israeli Air Force.

The envoy was to meet the Palestinian Authority's Gaza Security chief, head of Palestinian General Intellegence in Gaza, Amin Al-Hindi and PA negotiator Nabil Sha'ath. These meetings come a day after Zinni met Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer.

Prior to meeting Ben-Eliezer, Zinni vowed on Friday to stay in the region until he completed his mission. "The groups that do [conduct terror attacks] are clearly trying to make my mission fail. It did not succeed," said Zinni.

Opposition leader MK Yossi Sarid (Meretz) will meet with Zinni on Sunday in Jerusalem. Sarid said that he would encourage the U.S. administration to persist in its involvement in the region, despite the difficulties.
