Thanks for the cross-post. I was not attempting to justify anything. If you follow the thread of discussion I was really trying to point out that the question of the self-sufficiency of a central scripture is found in many traditions. I agree that radical Islam is a problem both for the world and for Islam itself. One of the ways humanity can end itself is to allow its technological evolution to get too far ahead of its spiritual evolution. Had nuclear weapons existed in Medieval Europe I doubt we'd be having this discussion today. Fanaticism and modern technology is a lethal combination. See iranian.com for one of the best articles I've seen on this problem. I have great hope that Iran may help provide a pathway forward in light of recent democracy moves on the part of Iranian youth.
