Dan, Re: "as opposed to the Itaniums that go down due to "sightings" - but never have bugs?"

AFAIK, no Itanium systems have shipped that exhibit any bugs. Compaq held off shipments because one of their validation platforms failed a certain test. Although some validation tends to weed out bugs that wouldn't even happen in real life, it is good to increase the reliability of the system in any way possible. Compaq was right to get the bug fixed (by the way, an erratum becomes a sighting if it deals with the platform, and a bug if it's a problem with the processor).

If you look at the list of endorsements that I posted here yesterday, you'd see that quite a few systems (perhaps pilot systems, or maybe limited production systems) have reached very well known companies (like Reuters and Wells Fargo Bank). These businesses are very pleased with performance and reliability.

As for your experiences with Intel based MP servers, you're not the only one. People even have problems with the most stable IBM mainframes, despite their highest levels of RAS. That's why IBM offers premium support for these, just like the top-tier OEMs offer support for Intel based MP systems. However, when you go with a smaller company like Rackserver, you will simply not get the same level of support. Problems happen no matter what platform you're using, and since AMD has not been able to convince any of the major OEMs to carry their product, their success in volumes will be severely limited.

Maybe that's why AMD is pushing Hammer so hard in this area - they want the OEMs to notice them. I think a tier-1 design win from any of them would be a big win for AMD. You'd certainly see a lot more of them if Hammer is successful.
