That's the best I've seen it put yet.

Mary, Re : "Real democracy is messy stuff, but that is also where you get the best and brightest. Perhaps there is a better way, but for now, democracy is the still the best way to go."

Nice post. But cant agree with you fully. At a national level, we often hear this kind of things in US and take it for granted, especially since Soviet collapse. America's system triumphed over USSR, without a doubt. Can you say the same about China over India ? China has become a superpower, while India has a very large starving population (inspite of enormous 'techinal' prowess). So, democracy has been a failure for half the world population.

Democracy as a concept is great. But without (some) self-restraint and discipline, it goes out of control. There is some sort of moderation needed in any society. America is a democracy well executed. China is a 'moderated' society well executed (no pun intended here!), given what they are each trying to achieve.

Regarding 'moderation' : Feelings are important in the society. You have to restrain people who steamroll over other peoples feelings and they needs to be moderated (and even in our democratic system we have rules to protect people from being steamrolled). Sure, moderation is not perfect and can be biased (as we saw on AMD thread), but 'no moderation' isn't perfect either.

Having said that, I did vote (very strongly) against Pauls ban. This is because, this thread is an investment thread. IMO, Paul adds enormous investment value to a thread, who (with a few exception) is completely disconnected from real life, IMO. If AMD Mod thread was real life, I would strongly speak out against Paul. But, then again Paul (I hear) has a very different personality in real life.

Maui.

>You've been posting for about 6 hours, but it seems like you have been here forever.

Hey, I've been reading posts here since sometime in 1999, I think. At this point, I feel pretty familiar with most of the people on the boards I read (mostly Mod AMD, INTC, and RMBS). I've been debating whether or not to get an SI membership for a long time, as I'm not much of an investor, I work in IT for a small company (and am working on finishing up college), and these boards can actually be quite helpful in making purchase decisions for both my office and my home, and besides, I love a good debate and I enjoy learning.

>I am sure we would all be interested in your college presentation. Perhaps, you could bounce some key ideas from a draft of your presentation on this thread. I am sure you would get some good feedback.

I'll have a preliminary outline thrown together by the end of the weekend, and will try to post what I've written on Monday. I'm giving the presentation on Wednesday, the 12th of December.

>Similarly, this thread is the way to go. There is good stuff in a lot of posts on this thread. Sure, there is a lot of garbage, but so what?

See, what's most important to me is the "good stuff", and I'm willing to wade through mountains of crap to get at it- of course, if that crap level can be minimized, all the better. I like the idea of moderation, but only if handled properly. I'm not a fan of the lifetime ban concept, but short suspensions are appropriate. I also feel the moderator should be someone who reads all of the posts.

Mary,

The trouble with "moderated" or "guided" stuff is that there is always people who think they know what is right for everybocy else.

You can look at it from both sides. The thread is a conversation. You can start unlimited number of these conversations - nobody is stopping you from starting one. The AMD Moderated thread was started in order to provide quiet insult free conversation - it mostly succeeded.

It is the guys from Intel thread who think they know what is better for us for everybody, and insist that the conversation about AMD has to include noise and insults. Some people who never meant to participate in the conversation on the Mod thread even go to the lenghts and walk over to AMD thread and "vote" to pretty much shut it down (in its intended form).

Pretty pathetic wouldn't you say? They think they know what kind of conversation AMD investors are allowed to have, and come in gangs wielding baseball bats trying to shut it down. All in the name of "free speech".
