Sharon considering cutting short U.S. trip; PA condemns attack

By Aluf Benn, Ha'aretz Correspondent, and agencies

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was said to be considering cutting short his trip to the United States in light of the double suicide bombing in Jerusalem on Saturday night, in which at least six people were killed and over 160 injured.

After being informed of the blasts, Sharon conferred by phone with Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. "Sharon's inclination is to return to Israel, but the decision must be made after taking into consideration his meeting with [United States President George] Bush and the importance of the meeting," a source in the prime minister's entourage said.

Ra'anan Gissin, a spokesman for the prime minister, said it was too early to tell whether Sharon would cut short his visit and rush home. "The prime minister is being briefed from Israel by the security authorities and by the defense minister on the current situation," Gissin said.

"The decision with regard to his trip and continuation and the actions that are to be taken will come later," Gissin said. "I don't know if he's considering right now (cutting short the trip) ... he's in the process of consultations."

"We still do not have exact details of where they came from and who did it and I don't want to jump to hasty conclusions," Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said shortly after the blasts. "There are many who want to murder the chances for a cease-fire and for peace. Of course the Palestinian Authority has to do more than it is doing," he added.

Israeli government spokesman Avi Pazner blamed Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat for the attacks, saying that he "bears direct responsibility for what happened today in Jerusalem."

Palestinian Authority condemns attack
In a statement, the Palestinian Authority condemned the terror attacks, expressing its "deep anger ... and pain" and accusing those behind it of trying to derail the cease-fire mission of U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni.

Abdel Aziz Rantisi, a Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, did not claim responsibility on behalf of the group, but said Hamas would continue carrying out attacks. "We have said several times that we are not going to accept the occupation," Rantisi said. "We are fighting Jewish terrorism, we are fighting the killers and defending our freedom, and our dignity."

Jorj, there was a tremendous pressure on Israel by the Arabist in the US State Department and more so by Colin Powell not to react to the hideous terror attacks as Powell serves Arab interest in the ME. Fact is that when the US was attacked this year a war campaign started against the terrorist organization and the government who harbored them.

The US State Department is playing double standard when it comes to Israel, not to mention the coward Europeans who already voice their opposition to US campaign against terror.

Jordan "the dear brothers" of the PLO ousted Arafat and his scum during the so called "Black September" over 25,000 PLO were killed then Arafat moved to Lebanon ........ a civil war started there because of him ........ 230 US Marines were massacred in a suicide bombing ............. the US sat quiet ................ PLO got more guts and intensified their civil war ............ Syria entered the fry forcing Israel to act ............... then they blame Sharon for the actions of the Christian Falangist Army ............... PLO was expelled to and landed in Tunis.

The US forced the Madrid conference leading to the so called Oslo agreement who proved to be a disaster ........ and further US and European pressure on Israel directly leaded to those repeated massacres since 1993.

Just browse PLO web sites and you will see that they do not recognize Israel and they call Palestine the whole territory west of the Jordan River. .......... which BTW it was granted to the Jews as their Homeland, the same way the Brit's defined Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Emirates, Libya, Tunis, Algiers etc. .......... BTW at the same time the Brit's invented also Pakistan and Afghanistan, Bangladesh and so on.

This is an absurd statement. The US has every right to ask Israel to back its strategy against terrorism and Israel has every right to say "No". If you are going to fault somebody other than the terrorists themselves, then it would be in Israel's own leadership. But obviously, Israel's leadership found that the benefits to backing the US's play, outweighed the liabilities.

It is not so absurd to believe that Powell's statements, which differentiate between the terrorism of Al Quaida (bad, must be utterly destroyed) and the terrorism of the Palestinians (bad, but should be overlooked for the sake of the "peace process") have actively encouraged Arafat & co. to turn up the flame on the terror. Why not? What is the downside for them? Powell is protecting them. The way they figure it, in the best case, Powell may wring out concessions from Sharon, such as insisting he negotiate under terror. In any case, the terror will definitely help Arafat reclaim the leadership role of the Palestinian cause from bin Laden.
