Smiles and Handshakes and Self-Deception
By Gary M. Cooperberg
November 29, 2001

Anthony Zinni, President Bush's hand-picked envoy to Israel, commented
after the shooting in Afula that such terrorist attacks only accent the
need to achieve a cease fire and return to the negotiation table.
Either Zinni simply doesn't know better, or he is another slick
politician who knows how to shape the facts to fit his needs. Would he
make such a statement after an attack in the United States? Is Bush
seeking to negotiate with Bin Laden?

There are those who would have us believe that the problem between
Israel and the PLO is a legitimate dispute which can be resolved by
negotiations. This is simply not true. There is no legitimate
dispute. The PLO wants to take over Israel by force and change the
state into a new Arab country under Arafat's control. This is a bold
and clever attempt by Arab thugs to create an image of legitimacy while
employing the tactics of murderous terrorists. Ever since Oslo began
Arafat has been visiting world leaders and creating the image of
respectability to cover his true identity as the most despicable
terrorist murderer of this generation. And the government of Israel has
been an accomplice in this deceitful charade.

There is no authentic "Palestinian" people. There never was such an
entity in history. The Islamic Arab nations have sought the destruction
of the Jewish State even before it was formed. When the Jews agreed to
the absurd partition plan which left her with indefensible borders, the
Arabs responded by trying to destroy us even then. All that has changed
over the years is the tactics employed by our enemies to accomplish that
same goal.

What is far worse than our enemies plans and murderous activities is
the stupidity of the successive Israeli governments, at least since the
Oslo fiasco. Yitzchak Rabin, when chastised at the concept of giving
weapons to the likes of Arafat, emphatically declared that should any
such weapon ever be used against Jews, Oslo would be declared null and
void and all lands would be repossessed. Today Sharon, who is alleged
to be far more radical than Rabin ever was, is begging Arafat to please
stop shooting for seven days and then he will go back to the
negotiations! What is there to negotiate? Our homeland? The acceptable
number of murders?

An honest Jewish leader would tell Mr. Zinni that we have tried harder
than anyone could imagine to find a resolution to the desire of Arabs in
Israel to have self rule. We have discovered that this is an
impossibility. We never ever agreed to give Arafat anything. Area A
was supposed to be Israeli sovereign territory under which we would
allow Arafat to govern his own people without our interference.
Instead, Arafat has virtually declared independence in these areas, and,
what is much worse, we have accepted this defacto revolution! What can
we expect from Bush and Zinni if our own leaders state that they have no
interest in regaining our own rightful homeland?

It is understandable for America to want to help us to resolve a
dispute, if that is what the problem is. Unfortunately our leaders are
deluding themselves out of fear of the United States. Were they honest,
they would never ever as much as suggest the possibility of another
state to rise upon Jewish soil. Had they half the self respect every
Arab nation has, they would declare, as the Arab leaders do, that we
have no choice, we have an obligation to our G-d to possess this land.
Every time we think we are being clever by trying to "make a deal", we
end up making things worse. The only thing preventing an all out Arab
war against Israel is their fear of our military might. Our governments
have been working very hard to reduce their fear. The end result is
that our enemies are more likely to attack us the more we seek to
"negotiate".

Eventually it will become clear that the only solution to this problem
is for Israel to remove her enemies by force. It is amazing that this
is not already obvious. When mothers and babies are being deliberately
murdered in cold blood in the name of liberating "palestine", then it is
high time that Israel liberate herself from those who choose to call
themselves "palestinians". If we continue to play this mad game of
"let's pretend it is possible to live together in peace" even as our
enemies blow themselves to smithereens in our shopping centers, then the
war that is coming will be far more devastating than it would be were we
to choose to win it now.

Time for Zinni and all Americans to leave Israel, and let them take care of their people: Too bad Colin Powell's wife and daughters weren;t shopping on that street tonite.

Carnage mounts in Jerusalem attacks

The attack was mounted with nail bombs

Suicide attackers armed with nail bombs have blown themselves up in a busy central Jerusalem street, killing at six other people along with themselves.
The blasts, which took place shortly after one another, happened in an area packed with shops and restaurants shortly after midnight local time and were followed by a car bomb explosion 20 minutes later.

A caller purporting to be from the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad told the BBC that the group was responsible and promised new attacks imminently.

Nail bombs are designed to create maximum carnage

Reports say more than 130 people, many of them in their late teens, were also injured in the attacks, described by Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres as "one of the worst... ever seen".

An Israeli Government official said Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was guilty of a "total lack of action in the domain of fighting terror".

But the Palestinian leadership issued a statement after the attacks condemning them and pledging to track down those responsible.

Claim

A caller saying they represented Islamic Jihad phoned the BBC bureau in Jerusalem and claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The caller, who spoke Arabic, said there would be further action against Israel during the holy month of Ramadan, which runs for approximately another two weeks.

The car bomb exploded as 20 people were trying to move the vehicle away

The caller rang off before further details could be asked.

Earlier on Saturday, Palestinian police arrested a top member of Islamic Jihad, Mohammed al-Hindi, based in Gaza City after a gun battle at his home.

Islamic Jihad and fellow militants Hamas have threatened to avenge Israel's killing last month of a Hamas military leader, Abu Hanoud.

City shaken

Witnesses saw people thrown into the air by the force of the blasts on Ben Yehuda Street, which could be heard across the city.

Our correspondent says many people in the area are in a state of shock. The area would have been particularly busy at the time, just after the end of the Jewish Sabbath.

The first blast happened outside a cafe in the Ben Yehuda shopping centre.

A passer-by, Yossi Mizrahi, told Reuters news agency of the carnage:

"I saw people without arms. I saw a person with their stomach hanging open. I saw a 10 year-old-boy breathe his last breath. I can't believe anybody would do anything like this."

The attacks come as senior US envoy Anthony Zinni is visiting Israel and Palestinian-controlled areas to try to secure a ceasefire.

But his arrival last week has coincided with an upsurge in violence.

On Thursday, an Islamic Jihad militant blew himself up on a bus, killing himself and three Israelis, and two Palestinians were reportedly shot dead by Israeli troops on Saturday.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has announced he will seek to end a visit to the US early and return to Israel.
