Afghanistan: Complex Political/Military Maneuvering.
While I don't necessarily agree with the "oil pipeline" angle, it is a plausible possibility. If you reread my prior posts on the subject, you'd see that the linked article supported my basic premise: We're getting drawn into some complex political and military maneuvering in which our "allies" may be outmaneuvering us. My basic position is that the easy successes are behind us, and our future involvement carries considerable risks in the months ahead. Thus, to the extent the Market's rally was fueled by a feeling of our own military invincibility, the more ambiguous and confusing outcomes in the months to come may prompt some "give-back" in the Stock Market.

Boy, that is one heck of a pessimistic article.

On the one hand he postulates that part of U.S. motivation for activities in Afghanistan is domination over the region's oil resources. Then he provides evidence that we are (unwittingly?) allowing Russia to achieve major influence. Seems to me that the evidence he presents undermines his own premise.

Even if the U.S. were or is trying to achieve this dominance, I'm not so sure that the thwarting of such aspirations would be a bad thing. Is conducting world commerce on a level playing field really so terrible? If September 11th taught us anything, it ought to have taught us that being a superpower is not all it's cracked up to be.
