I'm on a well also. I have an iron filter ahead of my softener and back flush that once a month. That back flush comes out dark orange for about 5 minutes. If I had an oak tree I water it with what comes out of the filter.

I put one of those things like your Purolater on my sink only mine is a Culligan. I also keep a gallon on hand but I keep mine in the refrigerator for drinking water. Brita also makes the filters.

I usually keep an extra case of water on hand, just because, and if a hurricane is coming, or a "winter storm" I buy more.

It is funny in Atlanta, every time the weather bureau says "snow", the stores are cleaned out of bread, milk, and water...and I'm really not kidding.

However, two years ago, we did lose our power for five days, and had to rely on coolers..and candles..not fun and we live in the heart of Atlanta! Our cables are underground, but we get our supply from the outside older neighborhood with above ground trees and power lines..Not a good combination. We are working on changing major power boxes.
