Suicide bomber on Haifa bus kills 15, injures at least 40

By David Ratner, Ha'aretz Correspondent and Ha'aretz Service and Agencies

Fifteen people were killed and at least 40 injured when a powerful explosion ripped through the No. 16 bus in the Halisa neighborhood of downtown Haifa just after midday Sunday, Magen David Adom reported. Three of the injured are in serious condition.

Police believe the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. The explosion took place on Hagiborim Street in a neighborhood of the coastal city reknowned for the peaceful coexistence between its Arabs and Jewish residents.

There are unofficial reports that Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The driver of the No. 16 bus said that the suicide bomber boarded the bus and paid for his ticket with a five shekel coin. When the driver called the man back to receive his change, the bomber detonated the bomb strapped to his waist. The driver, moderately injured, spoke from his hospital bed in Haifa.

Ya'akov Borovsky, the northern command police chief, said there had been a "general warning" about a possible attack, but no specific warnings. "There are many dead and injured," he said.

Channel One television reported that after the bomb exploded the bus rolled several hundred meters down a hill before stopping.

The injured were taken to Rambam, Bnei Zion and Carmel Hospitals.

Police have sealed all the roads leading into and out of the Hadar section of Haifa.
