Driftwood hunt went so-so... However, I did get some killer rocks and that's of interest to me as I want to do some sculptures in wood with rocks incorporated into them... kind of like inlaid into the wood.... We have a lot of granite up here as it is on the Canadian Shield... I find these amazing pieces of granite that have been down in the swirling parts of rapids and are worn smooth... also quartz and such things... in some of the wilder rivers where I like to go hiking along. Seems so elemental that these would be nice within some sculptures. A week ago, I found a wonderful piece of driftwood washed up on the shore of a very secluded lake. It's about 3 feet long and so swirled...twisted... that it looks like a Narwhale tusk or a Unicorn horn... I'm just looking at it leaning against the wall here and wondering whether to leave it as it is, or incorporate it into some kind of piece. This is the kind of work that I've been doing for the past 3 or so years... working mainly with found materials and then seeing what emerges from them after I study them for awhile. I guess I have been influenced by certain Inuit carvers who work a lot with the huge pieces of whale vertebrae that they find washed up on the Arctic shores.... Each of these bones is HUGE and quite porous... very interesting when it is worked into different forms... and when other materials are worked into the design. I guess I tend to like to work in traditional ways, but not in the ways that are really mainstream... more like Outsider Art, and so on. Well, more about this later. As usual, I have several things to take care of today... In a way, it will almost be kind of nice when the snow comes and I have to stay put indoors more of the time. (Well, actually, it won't be nice, but I like to tell myself that... :o)
