In effect, the Fed would be creating (counterfeiting?) the money that households and businesses were now spending. This is tantamount to dropping money from a helicopter. It would allow households and businesses to increase their spending without increasing their own debt. Their balance sheets wouldn't deteriorate further. Instead, the Treasury's balance sheet would deteriorate.
