Dem's 'Unpatriotic' Slap at Bush Draws Bipartisan Fire

A top Democrat drew bipartisan fire Sunday for calling President Bush's economic plan "unpatriotic."

"The bottom line is, this is George Bush's recession," said Rep. Nita Lowey, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in an interview USA Today on Friday.

The paper then quoted Lowey calling Bush's proposed economic stimulus package "unpatriotic, inappropriate, wrong."

On Sunday Republican Rep. Peter King said Lowey's "unpatriotic" remark crossed the line.

"It's clearly wrong," he told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg.

"You should never say that about a president in a time of war. You shouldn't use 'un-patriotic' unless you're talking about an act of treason.

"Even if Nita Lowey strongly disagrees with the president's economic policies," King continued, "you don't question someone's patriotism because you don't like the timing of his tax cuts."

At least one leading Senate Democrat agreed with King, saying Lowey's comment was not "appropriate."

"I do not expect to ever have my patriotism questioned when I debate public policy questions in this country and I would never do it to another American either," Sen. Robert Torricelli told Malzberg. "I do not think that it's appropriate."

JF first we will go after Somalia, and then Iraq, if the people don't turn on the offensive before then. It is sad that we are evolving from the world's honorable policman under Clinton to the world's bully under Bush
