There's no noise scale of 1 to 10 to measure grief, anger or fear as mourners don't wail or cry out in our culture. I agree.

Nor can a departing smile be construed to mean one thing or another at a funeral. But a smile can mean we leave a token of love mixed with sorrow, a soft smile as one bids adieu to the family.

Not having seen these smiles you describe I can't vouch for them, but such don't shock me. So the journalists antics (like papperazi) may be the problem but they're inescapable? Remembering the ceremony for President Eisenhower, I recall Dan Rather's on the spot TV discriminating observation (in poor taste IMO) describing the class of citizens standing in line to view President Eisenhower's casket in the rotunda.
