This was no less true in Afghanistan, particularly after the Soviet orchestrated coup d'etat in 1978. I would be surprised if a good part of the moudjahidin hatred of the Communists was not due to this, rather than just American manipulation.

Agreed...

The Communist gov't couldn't tolerate anything but ideology promulgated by the state... But, also, they still remember the more than 10 million Russians lost in WWII to the Germans... So, their post war paranoia about their surrounding borders has some basis for its extremism... This doesn't excuse their actions but helps us understand why they did what they did...
