I'm in Southern California <Orange County>... I also did the mall today. Nice mall, upscale stores.. I thought it was somewhat crowded but I managed to find parking quickly <an oddity at this time of year>. I didn't see the usual throngs of shoppers toting loads of bags... lot's of 'looking' however.

I made a stop at Toys-R-Us on the way home... I have always hated the place at this time of year... not today... parking everywhere, wide open shopping aisles, employees everywhere with time on their hands to assist customers... it was weird... never experienced this before at xmas time.

Last stop was Guitar Center... business was humming there due to a big sale. They took a good chunk of my money this year <g>.

I shop a lot of discounters... they seem 'off' too... it's not just high-end and regular retailers. I've noticed business seems off in both Costco and Wal-Mart lately <among others>.

On the DVD front, the one thing I am seeing are people in the electronics depts. DVD is hot and the players are getting very reasonable. Retailers are dumping remaining videos at very low prices and DVD's look to be selling well. Notice how much retail space in music stores is devoted to cassettes as opposed to CD's these days? It's become the same with VHS vs DVD.

The fact that we had an earlier than usual Thanksgiving, extending the shopping season into Christmas may make some difference, but I'm not convinced this is going to be a great retail season. JMHO from a bargain hunter that wasn't too impressed today... I'll be curious to see how this progresses thru the month.

My 'bargain' this fall was a new Chevy Suburban... love the 0% financing.
