"Bernie Goldberg is a G-ddamn traitor," the executive said late Friday. "The book is trash written by a bitter man who is now determined to settle a score."

Smithee, in the world you and I work in, the thing that is supposed to matter most about information is whether it is true or false. Interestingly, the executive quoted here doesn't say that the book is false. He just says it is trash.

I don't plan on reading the book. All the evidence I need about CBS' bias I can get by watching Rather in action. By watching his fawning over Clinton, back in '92, ignoring the man's obvious integrity flaws, watching his refusal to even cover the Condit story for two months, mentioning it not once until Chandra's body was as cold as a Slurpee in January.

When I was a young pup, Walter Cronkite held that chair. I don't remember him being nearly as biased as Rather, but I was younger then and may not have realized it.
