by staff and agencies
Israel has launched missile attacks in Gaza city in retaliation for the bloody weekend of terror wreaked by Palestinian suicide bombers.

The missiles came down near Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the city. His helicopter, which was due to pick him up from Ramallah, has been hit.

Clouds of black smoke rose into the air. Palestinian security personnel ran from the area as eight helicopters hovered over the city, drawing machine-gun fire.

At least 10 missiles were fired. Ambulances raced to the area, sirens blaring.

Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon had promised his nation a tough response to for the killing of at least 25 people - Jews and Arabs - and the wounding of another 200 in suicide attacks over the weekend.

Mr Sharon yesterday told George Bush: "Israel will act against those who perpetuate terror and those who send them on their missions."

Mr Sharon met foreign minister Shimon Peres, defence minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and security chiefs when he flew into Ben Gurion airport on his return from Washington today.

He is to make a televised address later today and tonight is holding a full cabinet meeting to discuss Israel's response to the worst bombings since the intifada began.
