I just think that we have gotten to the point where we look for the touchy feelie background of what made the anomaly and inevitably it will be exposed that they had a tough childhood (didn't we all) and it ends up being used as an excuse.

Curiosity is out of favor right now, I know, for the very reason you state. Analyzing a scenario has become synonymous for making excuses and there has been a backlash against that. I think things have swung too far. We're throwing the baby out with the bath water. We have to be able to have curiosity without the presumptive tarnish of showing sympathy and condoning.

End of rant.

I have a certain curiosity strictly from an analytical POV, but like you, I'm really tired of hearing about "reasons" that eventually turn into an "excuse".
