"We hold this truth to be self-evident.

Problem statement....who's truth? That is why the self-evident part is criticized. The implication is too universal and authoritative.

There would be several possibilities: Aristotle's starting point (man is a political and rational animal); Kant's Categorical Imperative (never treat another rational being merely as a means, but as an end also); the Social Contract (what we all implicitly agree to in forming society); utilitarianism (given that we are constructing democratic institutions, the greatest good for the greatest number); the "confessional relativist" (they may not be objectively validated, but they are the ideals that animate our culture); the pragmatist (given the assumption that we are looking for stability and improvement, promote what works); and possibly some others I have left out........

Okayyyyyy.

You try it out sometime.

Let me know how it works out.

Sounds pretty good, on paper. Teachers, doctors, contractors, but no police.

Schools, clinics, homes, no jails.

Good luck.
