Think W nodded off during lunch?

Bush and Greenspan Discuss the Economy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan met on Monday to discuss the U.S. economy a week after it was declared to be in a recession, the White House said.

``The president was interested in listening to the chairman's points of view on the economy. The president is deeply concerned about the economy,'' White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters.

The meeting, over lunch, was one of a series of meetings and not triggered by any specific event, Fleischer said. But it was the first meeting between Bush and Greenspan since the National Bureau of Economic Research last week declared that the U.S. economy entered a recession in March.

Also last week, White House budget director Mitch Daniels said the U.S. government would run budget deficits until at least fiscal 2005 due to the economic slowdown and costs of the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

``The president has the economy on his mind despite events around the world,'' Fleischer said.

Greenspan had been given credit for a record-long economic expansion during the 1990s. He has led the Fed this year through a quick series of 10 interest-rate cuts, totaling

4.5 percentage points, aimed at reviving growth.

The Fed is widely expected to trim rates again when its policy setting committee meets on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Fleischer said it was also essential for the Senate to pass its version of a proposed economic stimulus package

That second guessing can help- someone took issue with my FMO purchase last year on the MB- pointing out asbestos liability. While I didn't sell right away, it prompted me to dig a bit deeper. A devil's advocate sometimes proves quite valuable.
