My softener takes out the iron that makes it past the prefilter.

Softeners have a rod in them that picks up iron ions and replaces them with sodium ions in the water. When they recharge they use the salt water to clean the iron ions off of the rod. Softener salesmen will tell you, truthfully, that no salt is added to your water. They don't tell you that sodium, which is the bad part of salt, IS added.
