Kit, I was actually sitting next to a guy in the simulcast room who did that a couple of years ago. We had a maiden race (always a red flag, IMHO) in Louisiana (a crimson flag) and Lucas shipped in a horse that had won its first race but was disqualified. The competition would never make a can of Mighty Dog and there were only 5 of them, so the odds of finishing third looked pretty solid. The odds were 1-9. This fella bet $10,000 on the Lucas horse to show. It finished dead last. The horse, about whom I'd said, "if he wins, there will be a Congressional investigation," won. The sad part was, the guy couldn't afford to lose that much money. He left in a daze.
