Oracle Announces the First Database for Intel(R) Itanium(TM) Processor Family Oracle's Nearly 2 Million Developers Get Early Access to Database Technology For Intel Itanium Architecture
SAN FRANCISCO, ORACLE OPENWORLD, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?1159633) Oracle Corporation (Nasdaq: ORCL - news), the world's largest enterprise software company, announced today the immediate availability of an Oracle9i Database developer release designed for Intel® Itanium(TM) Architecture. Oracle is continuing its commitment to its nearly 2 million developer community by being the first to offer and early release of its flagship database for the Itanium processor family. By providing this access, Oracle is offering its developer community a head start on designing next-generation applications. Developers can access the Oracle9i Database developer release for Itanium-based systems via the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), the industry's first technical resource for building Oracle9i applications.
Liz Claiborne Inc., a leading retailer has been successfully evaluating the Oracle database technology on HP-UX Itanium. ``Itanium is more than just a future architecture,'' said Joe Yankauskas, manager of Technical Services, Liz Claiborne, Inc. ``It is real today and helping us to plan our IT strategy. One of our IT goals is to run a large Oracle database on HP-UX Itanium, the HP Itanium server running gives us a fast, stable platform for data access.''
The leading database provider for 64-bit architecture, Oracle is providing developers early access to the Oracle9i Database for the Itanium processor. Widespread industry development for Itanium-based servers will be reflected by software infrastructure providers such as Oracle making their platforms available to independent software vendors (ISVs).
``Support from leading software vendors like Oracle is key for the adoption of our Itanium family,'' said Lisa Hambrick, director, Enterprise Processor Marketing, Intel Corp. ``Intel and Oracle have worked together to ensure that developers have early access to the platform technologies needed to build cost-effective applications for a choice of system manufacturers and operating system vendors.''
Oracle has a long-standing tradition of offering its developers the latest software for leading hardware architectures. There have been more than 13,000 downloads of Oracle8i Demo Release for Itanium-based systems with Windows, Linux, and HP-UX during the past 12 months, from OTN. Oracle9i Database developer release is available today for Linux64, HP-UX (Itanium), and Windows XP 64-bit via download from OTN, otn.oracle.com.
``The introduction of Oracle9i Database developer release for the Itanium microprocessor will provide ISVs and end-users with the ability to evaluate the full power of 64-bit computing,'' said Jean S. Bozman, research director for IDC's worldwide server group. ``Oracle's years of experience in providing scalable databases for fully 64-bit server systems since the mid-1990s make it an attractive choice for Itanium-based enterprise solutions.''
``Oracle is the leader in providing open, multi-platform solutions to developers and customers,'' said Juan Jones, vice president, System Platforms Division, Oracle Corporation. ``Our continued support for Intel Itanium extends our leadership position among developers as the supplier of the most advanced database products in the world.''
