McLeodUSA in Recapitalization Pact with Forstmann

By TSC Staff

12/04/2001 08:40 AM EST

McLeodUSA (MCLD:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) dropped 17.3% to 43 cents in premarket Instinet trading after the company reached a comprehensive recapitalization and financial restructuring plan with Forstmann Little and a group of secured lenders.

The plan would eliminate at least 95% of the company's $2.9 billion of bond debt and the associated $300 million of annual interest expense. After the transaction closes, Forstmann, which reached a similar arrangement last week with XO Communications (XOXO:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), will own about 45% of the outstanding common equity of McLeodUSA.

It appears this is another, be it minor one indication of the troubled spectrum of the communications field. American business and populous both are going to have to pay a higher rate to maintain service you have deflation in profits on one end due to inflation on the other. Something has to give.

The administration cost cannot exceed the products ability to generate profit or the price of the product must go up commodities included. This can be extrapolate to, even with a lower cost base as in commodities, the administration end due to the telecommunications high cost will impact the all. It would be utterly ironic if due to our SEC laws we have actually gone so far from the premise of what is practical or not we have blinded the lot to reality. Rules that rewrite rules do attribute to sevice but they don't seem to be aiding the business that services the all.
