O'Reilly: Russert Gave Hillary 'A Pass'

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 10:35 a.m. EST

NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert is still taking heat over his velvet glove treatment of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton on "Meet the Press" Sunday, after admitting yesterday that he failed to ask her several important questions.

"You know, Russert gave her a complete pass," Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly told radioman Don Imus Tuesday morning.

"I love Tim and he's a good guy and he's a good interviewer," the "O'Reilly Factor" host added. "But it's tough to get Hillary Clinton and if you ask her tough questions you're never going to get her back. So I think he was laying the groundwork there for future appearances."

O'Reilly said he would have pressed Clinton on why she's attended funerals for only two World Trade Center victims - including a televised ceremony for FDNY Chaplain Father Mychael Judge where she gave the eulogy - and has ignored calls to her office from other victims' families.

Yesterday Russert also admitted to Imus that he failed to ask the former first lady why she laughed and rolled her eyes in disdain during President Bush's address to a joint session of Congress just days after the 9/11 attacks.

After his appearance, Imus and his crew chided the NBC newsman, speculating facetiously that Clinton agreed to the interview only if certain topics weren't covered.
