DukeCrow,

You stated to the two verses, "It seems to me that these verses when taken in context are simply a commentary on waging war in self-defense against an aggressor. You must see something in these verses which I don't see."

I will accept your interpretation of the two verses as self-defense. Seems reasonable. (I am not sure if I agree or not, especially on 9:5, but I will go along with it for now!) However, the radical Muslims commiting these atrocities and terrorism are saying that the are invoking the use of these verses in self defense, due to:

1. the killing of Muslims by non-Muslims in the Gulf War
2. desecrating holy lands by American soldiers having crosses and bibles with them on Muslim soil during the Gulf War
3. Islamic governments such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc. aligning with America, and letting us have soilders on Islamic lands to have an American presence in Islamic territories
4. American policy on Israel
(see Sura 9:4 - [at-Taubah 9:4] Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him).)
5. etc...

So there is a fine line between someone thinking they are acting defensively verses agressively. And just due to number 4, I think you must consider the radicals side of invoking 9:5 as a defensive measure. 9:4 states "...nor have supported anyone against you." I think America has supported Israel to the Muslim, and I also think Muslims think Israel is against them, and there is no treaty I know we have in place with the Muslims. So they might think they have the right to slay the idolaters wherever they find them (in America), don't you think? And they definitely think the Judeo-Christian way is idolatry, which is the basis of our country, right?

You must be objective here and consider maybe their interpretation can validate their terrorist acts. Just consider it!

God Bless,
IGIT
