jerome,
RE: israel strategy. I will not discuss underlying issues here because they are largely irrelevent vis a vis the short term crisis. I don't see any alternative to what sharon has done. They are reacting as we did when attacked. Arafat is getting the message that if terrorism is not brought under control he will become irrelevent or worse yet even dead. Ball is in his court. If i were sharon i would combine this new tough strategy with an olive branch of sorts. I would announce in the next few days the cessation of all settlement activity at this time even if he were to say they are being only temporarily stopped due to the dangerous security situation. The thought is once stopped easier to deal with arafat if he does in fact crack down. There are rare times in history when brinksmanship pays off. Maybe we will get lucky here although i doubt it.
As far as the market goes mideast war could be a show stopper. mike
