Your analysis of SanDisk's strategy may well be accurate. And your analogy to Sony's position a few decades back may be accurate as well. There appears to be one glaring difference--Sony actually understood that it had to advertise, promote and publicize its products to build its brand.

Do you see any real evidence of SanDisk aggressively marketing its products? I do not. The consequence of that, I fear, is that most people take whatever memory card is available in a store or on the Web--or the cheapest. When film was king, Kodak and Fuji spends huge amounts in brand building. SanDisk is largely invisible as far as the consumer is concerned.

Jim, a long-time SNDK shareholder
