A sad reminder for the tragedy of an old friend.
usatoday.com
This victim was the granddaughter of a high school friend. San Elizario was a very small town (2500) and so everyone knew everyone. Some interesting West Texas history. The legend of Texas states that the Texas Rangers always got their man. In the 1870s San Elizario was the county seat and was a growing border crossing with Mexico. In the winter the citizens used to get extra money by sending wagons to the salt beds near Guadalupe Peak and selling the salt in Mexico. One day a wealthy businessman filed a claim on the salt beds and then requested the Rangers help him keep these peasants from taking the salt. There was an ineffecutal exchange, the peasants ran back to San Elizaro with the Rangers in persuit. The Rangers held up in the church where they were attacked and they surrendered. They were stripped of their guns and set loose. The state was so incensed they moved the county seat to the town of Franklin, which was renamed El Paso del Norte.
