American Fighter - Comments Please

>>Calling himself Abdul Hamid, John Walker, who goes by his mother's last name, was identified today as one of the Taliban soldiers who had taken refuge in the tunnels of a Northern Alliance prison in Mazar-i-Sharif. After days of fighting in which hundreds of soldiers were killed, he and the Taliban fighters he was with were finally flushed out when the tunnels were flooded>>

The case of John Walker raises some interesting questions:

1. Should he be tried in a US court or in a mililtary tribunal?

2. Will he "confess" to his crimes and be let off with a much lighter sentence than his co-fighters from the Taliban?

3. Would he be projected as a victim or a perpetrator?

4. Was he fighting for Taliban to get the 70 virgins waiting for him in paradise?

5. Was his family rewarded by Bin Laden or Muslim organizations for their son's sacrifice?

6. Was he fighting America because he hated the liberties and prosperity of America?

7. Was he an evil-doer or just a lost rebel?

8. Was he influenced by Noam Chomsky?

9. Was his mother happy about his joining the Taliban? Did she even know that he had joined the Taliban?

10. Was he an american spy? Didn't the FBI say that it was very dificult to penetrate the Taliban and Afghan tribes?

11. Should we now also suspect the patriotism of white Americans who have converted to Islam?

12. Should we also have American citizens who have converted to Islam be considered suspects and be forced to fill out a survey form?

13. Should we take away the rights of American citizens (not just permanent residents, legal and illegal immigrants) because they may be these citizen Taliban sympathizers? And they can be more dangerous because they would not be easily profiled. After all Sep 11 was a big event. And you know they might have the nuclear bomb.

14. Is illitracy and poverty causing young men to join the Taliban and Al Qaeda?

15. Did John Walker join the Taliban because US is ruled by rich rulers who enjoy themselves while suppressing their citizens?

16. Was John Walker influenced by Al-Jazeera which is said to be a mouthpiece of the Taliban? Would he have been on the right side if he had been watching CNN?

17. If we can't understand the motives of a "regular" american very well, what hope do we have to understand the psyche of an Afghan or Arab or Chechen or Palestinian fighter?
