Mack Brown would be king, if he could only let go of his obsession that the son of a pro QB HAS to be a good QB. Fans (self included) have been booing Simms and howling for Major to come in for the last 2 years now.. Hadn't worked till the 4 turnovers killed his Rose Bowl chances...

Bowden said it's all about getting the best athletes, i.e., recruiting.

He claimed that (even at a football factory like Fla.St.) he doesn't have enough time to teach the kids, so athleticism wins out.

As for ND's recruiting chops, they are at a bit of a disadvantage in that they actually have admissions standards, whereas you can go to Minnesota, e.g., and know you won't have to write a paper, ever.

Also, it's been a while since I've been to South Bend, but, when I last visited, the place (i.e., the city proper) had all the charm of Jersey City. If it's not a football weekend (and there are only 5 or 6 of those a year), there's not much happening at ND. I guess that's true of a lot of remote campuses, though. My brother says that if he had to do it all over again, he'd try Northwestern or an ACC school with 15,000 coed honeys<g>. Me, I'd still go to Columbia, if I could get in. If not, a campus with 15,000 coeds doesn't sound bad<g>.

I'm hoping for Gruden, myself, but I'd bet on Coughlin. Gruden is going to be busy for the next 7 or 8 weeks; I don't think he walks away now from something he's built over the last few seasons. You can tell he's an old offensive coordinator (4?? years as such with the Eagles). The Raider defense needs help.

Holtz's best team was his first, wasn't it? Old Lou showed up on campus and there's Raghib Ishmael (among others) waiting for him. Hell, at Columbia, I'd take Rocket's sister.
