Great flood/firm ground? Oh never mind. <g>

I didn't say I disagreed with the analogy, BTW...

While it may be, probably is, true that in the short run other nations exist as long as we are willing to allow them to exist, in the long run that attitude will get us nowhere. For one thing, it will trash our standard of living and way of life if we start acting like a pariah nation. Also, other nations' inclination to band together to combat the superpower is limited when we are a mostly benevolent superpower. If we start nuking people or taking stuff over just for the oil or whatever, I can easily foresee other advanced nations banding together to take us on. We may be the only superpower, but we do not have a monopoly on technology or economic or military power.

Our occasional excursions against weak Arab and Muslim countries do not mean we could take on China or even Russia (not to mention Europe and Japan).
