fair nuf. Lets drop slavery from the menu. You have made your point in an excellent way.

"...the real solution is to be found on the front-end (cause) and not the back-end (punitive/rehabilitive)..."

Some times we can understand the cause (abused childhood, etc). Some times we can't. In either event the heinous criminal has his place in history and we will continue to find him even in the best of societies.

Perhaps we can structure society in a way that some of the circumstances that lead to this kind of problem will be remedied. I doubt that no matter how well we understand causes we can completely eliminate heinous criminals from perpetrating heinous crimes. It was long thought that education would eliminate drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies and VD. We know the causes of these things. The people most educated about them are often those that find themselves personally involved in the problems.

Facts are, when we have murdering rapists, etc. among us. We understand some but not all of the causes; I do not see how we arrive at a real solution by looking only at the front end and ignoring that a consequense to this type of issue is our responsibility. When you are a victim it is too late to find justice by looking only at causes. As a nation we are very victimized and justice should be the current state of affairs. There are thousands of such perpetrators in our culture and not having a satisfactory back-end is giving permission for it to continue. Even to the point of making the lack of effective consequence one more of the many causes.

Sometimes the punitive/rehabilitative resolutions do not bring the scales back in balance either, then what? Is justice a worthy goal or is it meaningless? Sometimes I get the feeling that people are willing to let the idea slip away in place of comfort with the status quo.
