PC motherboards built with Intel's 845B chipset are expected to hit the market by the second week of this month.

The 845B chipset is based on Intel's 845 chipset but designed with the enhanced capability of supporting double data rate (DDR) transfers between the central processing unit and memory devices on the motherboard.

There are two basic types of RAM available today X SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and RDRAM (Rambus dynamic RAM). The 845 chipset supports SDRAMs.

There are three incompatible forms of SDRAM memory modules currently in widespread use. The form a user can use depends on the RAM sockets installed on your motherboard. Most systems available on the market today take SDRAM in 168-pin DIMMs (dual in-line memory modules). Older Pentiums and later 486 PCs use FPM and EDO RAM in 72-pin SIMMs (single in-line memory modules).

The DDR memory devices will be the mainstream memory chips used on the new generation of Pentium 4 (P4) personal computers.

Industry sources disclosed that Intel would start delivering 845B chipsets starting from the 48th weeks of this year. As Intel begin shipments of the new chipset, the move will have two impacts: First, major PC motherboard makers will introduce products built with 845B chipsets, on which DDR memory could be used. Second, memory device makers will shift more of their production capacity to DDR memory devices.

Most PC motherboard makers disclosed that they had plans to introduce motherboards which can accommodate the new socket 478 Pentium 4 CPU, that was manufactured with the 0.13-micro technology.

They also claimed that if the short supply of P4 could not be solved, consumers' willingness to buy new P4 systems consumers would be affected.

In order to stimulate market demand, Intel is expected to introduce its 2.2 GHz P4 CPU in the near future.

Local PC motherboard makers have made preparations for the production of products that will use 845B chipsets. As soon as Intel starts shipping the new chipsets, the PC makers will be able to deliver the 845B-installed PCs immediately.

PC makers are not promoting their latest models at the Info Month exhibition. Most PC makers are displaying their P4 systems built to operate at 1.7 GHz. Some models are marketed at less than NT$30,000. Acer is promoting a model built with DDR memory.

All PC system vendors including Acer Sertek, ASUStek, Twinhead, NEC, IBM, Compaq, Apple are lowering the prices of their notebook PCs from NT$5,000 to NT$3,000 at the Info Month exhibition.
