Sharon victory as US policy hardens against Arafat
By Stephen Robinson in Washington
(Filed: 04/12/2001)

"YOU in America are in a war against terror," Ariel Sharon told an American supporter of Israel moments after he left his White House meeting with President Bush on Sunday. "We in Israel are in a war against terror - it's the same war."

The Israeli prime minister was reportedly in good spirits after the meeting, and with good reason: by speaking of Israel's right to self-defence yesterday, the Bush administration had publicly come around to the Israeli view of the universality of the terrorist threat.

Since September 11, Israel has demanded that its enemies be on the target list in the war on terrorism.

This demand, rejected by the administration - and most forcefully by Secretary of State Colin Powell - was souring the US-Israel relationship.

But far from being a frosty affair as might have been expected the White House meeting was, by Mr Sharon's account - which was leaked to William Safire of The New York Times - a friendly encounter.

No pressure was applied to Israel to hold back in its retaliation for the weekend suicide attacks, and nor was Mr Sharon asked to lift his insistence on seven days of absolute quiet on the streets before peace talks can resume.
