From your link.. American officials fear that Mr Sharon may be planning to destroy the haystack of Mr Arafat's discredited Palestinian Authority by seizing back control of the areas Israel has ceded. Hence, the frantic outburst of sympathy from US officials, including Colin Powell, the secretary of state, and Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, on talk shows yesterday. I would have thought that the outburst of sympathy, as the writer puts it, would have had the opposite effect of encouraging a stronger Israeli reaction, not a weaker one. jttmab
