I think that the issue is best discussed from a legal, rather than religious, standpoint. I am a Catholic, but I think that the Church's position on this matter and contraception is not framed properly. People will have irresponsible sex. I think that we should seek to mitigate the potential for eggs being fertilized in the near to intermediate term, and in the longer term, we should seek to limit, through education and proper parenting, the frequency of irresponsible sex. I do not think that the Catholic position realistically addresses this issue, nor can or should the Catholic sense of morality be foisted on all Americans. As a Constitutionalist, I am appalled at the use of abortion as birth control. Any argument in favor of abortion is 9.99 times out of ten rooted in either the rights of the woman being paramount, or simple pragmatism. On the issue of pragmatism, just because something is pragmatic does not make it any less wrong. On the issue of the woman's rights, I have to call BS on that one. With rights come responsibilities. Obviously, responsibility is a non-factor in this case- there is no responsibility. It is a lack of responsibility that makes the abortion a necessity. In fact, it is a paradox to say that irresponsible women should not be able to have abortions. Pragmatically, they should have an abortion to protect society from their further irresponsibility as the child grows up. But, again, that is pragmatism for you, and it does not take into account the right to life of the unborn. The liberal solution to the issue is to dispense condoms and sex ed, and to permit abortion on demand. I agree with the former, and disagree with the latter. But, in so educating children, we also must work to discourage them from having sex before they are able to deal with the entire issue as an adult. I think that this is where the liberals fall short. Oh well. Time to have dinner. Thanks again for taking the time to debate this in earnest. Regards, ~SB~
