Mubarak, Abdullah call on Israelis and Palestinians to resume negotiations

Egyptian President Mubarak and King Abdullah II of Jordan yesterday held a session of intensive talks during which they probed all potential efforts for avoiding deterioration of the security situation between Palestinians and Israelis following the outbreak of violence acts and blasts in Jerusalem, Haifa and Gaza the wake of acts of violence between Israelis and Palestinians which is pushing the region towards the verge of danger.

Talks between the two leaders tackled the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, regional positions and bilateral relations.

Talks have highlighted agreement by Egypt and Jordan to denounce violence and the need for bringing calm back to the region.

The two leaders stressed the importance of resuming negotiations and bringing the peace process back to track.

Answering a question on what could be done by Egypt and Jordan so that the situation may not be out of control, Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said the two countries condemned the latest incidents and violence and called on Israelis and Palestinians to resume negotiations.

On whether Mubarak and King Abdullah would suggest anything new in their summit, Minister Maher said there was a new vision which was offered in Powell speech and we had Mitchell report which represented as a guideline for resuming negotiations.

He said the two leaders urged the Israeli and Palestinian sides to break this vicious circle of violence and to resume negotiations.

Maher said Secretary of State Colin Powell has provided a visualization of the solution adding he supported sustaining these efforts so that opponents of peace and security may not have a chance to become victorious.

Maher said those have committed criminal acts should not be allowed to bring to stop the process which would serve the interests of Israelis, Palestinians and all countries of the region.

The Foreign Minister said a solution can only be reached through violence and revenge, actions and reactions adding it is important for both sides to realize that there is an interest in resuming negotiations for finding a solution based on the establishment of a Palestinian state and an Israeli state.

Maher said security can only be achieved through an agreement.

On his part, the Jordanian Prime Minister called on Israelis and Palestinians to take the new US vision seriously, resuming negotiations and applying Tenet agreement and Mitchell recommendations.

He warned against the deterioration of the situation saying if the vicious circle of violence went ahead, it would dispell hopes for achieving peace.

Egypt's ambassador to Jordan Mohamed Hegazy said the meeting between the two leaders came in the framework of sustained consultation and coordination between Cairo and Amman for reactivating efforts aimed at resuming political process, mainly in the light of the new positive US move represented in statements by US President George Bush on the Palestinian state and statements by Secretary of State Colin Powell which contained a new US vision of the situation in the region.

A spokesman for the Jordanian government Salah A1 Qallab said the Egyptian Jordanian summit came against a background of volatile situation in the region.

He said Egyptian Jordanian efforts would be intensified in the upcoming days for keeping the US involved in the occupied lands adding if Washington was kept away from the region, other developments non beneficial to Arabs and Palestinians would take place.

Minister of Information Safwat A1 Sherif said President Mubarak asserted that there is no substitute for resuming negotiations, dialogue and abandoning the use of force and revenge which claim the lives of innocents.

The President called on both sides to appeal to reason and logic and to exert all possible efforts to resume negotiations and dialogue, A1 Sherif said.

He said the summit talks dealt with deteriorating situation in the light of mutual escalation between Israelis, Palestinians and the bloody incidents between the two sides.
