I think the voice always becomes gravel edged after a certain age.

Bob Dylan's voice has changed the same way, but Dylan has chosen to use it to his advantage. Dylan sounds much better with age....I used to often switch off the lights and listen to TOOM in the dark...the voice itself touches my soul. I used to feel the same about Rod Stewart's 'growl'. LOL

Waits just couldn't adapt to the changes in his voice I guess......and he's not that old either....

I didn't know about the Eagles thingie, I don't pay much attention to the lyricists generally, but I'd say Waits has penned some great lyrics....
