"How is His self- sacrifice a propitiation of Himself? In other words, how is justice appeased by the self- sacrifice?"

The debt is not imposed, but it remains because justice is an attribute of God Himself, and He cannot act in a any way that would deny Himself. The word propitiation should give you the the answer because Scripture uses it with respect to the sacrifice of Christ. Your argument is with God, not me.
