Senneca's intentions unknown

Quarterback sounds frustrated after loss

Wednesday, December 05, 2001

About 30 minutes after a bowl-costly, 20-14 loss at Virginia Sat urday, Penn State quarterback Matt Senneca left the impression that he may be contemplating a transfer or simply forfeiting his final year of eligibility next season.

"I'm not getting in to that right now," Senneca said in answer to a semi-hushed inquiry on the subject as reporters started melting away from a postgame interview.

His answer left what few reporters remained at that point with raised eyebrows. There was no doubt Senneca at least has been considering both options, along with returning for his final season.

Senneca, a senior who has junior eligibility, opened the season as the starter, but injuries and the emergence of freshman phenom Zack Mills relegated the Allentown Central Catholic product to backup status at season's end.

In 10 games, Senneca targeted 54 of 126 passes (42.9 percent) for 755 yards and three touchdowns. He threw five interceptions and had a QB rating of 93.11.

Mills played 10 games and completed 127 of 230 passes (55.2 percent) for 1,669 yards and nine touchdowns. He had 12 interceptions and a QB rating of 118.65.

What Senneca decides about his football future is anyone's guess at this point.

Hopes of a starting job would mean transferring to a school in a lower division, since Senneca already has taken his redshirt year and he would have to sit out one season if he were to transfer to a Division I school.

If Senneca opts to depart, he'll leave the starting job to Mills with highly touted Michael Robinson, a redshirt freshman, as the backup.

If Senneca stays, coach Joe Paterno no doubt will declare the starting job open at spring practice and let Senneca and Mills decide it.

As the clouds darkened for Penn State Saturday at Virginia, with Mills struggling against a complicated defensive scheme, it was Senneca who took the hanging-head freshman aside for some encouraging words.

"I told him to keep his head up and keep fighting," Senneca said. ...
